I’ve had brilliant coaches and I’ve also spent time with many incredible athletes. I am always searching for a greater level of understanding and my passion for the mind and body has allowed me to forever continue to learn and most importantly, put things into practice. Unfortunately my memory wont allow me to remember exactly where all of these quotes and tips have come from but I have done my best to reference people when I can. Remember though that no message is our own. Only our delivery and adherence.   TOP 10 TIPS FROM A LIFETIME OF COACHES + PROFESSIONAL SPORT Be a rock not a sponge (Jason Laurence)- This is in relation to helping others (staff, clients, athletes) when they come to you with problems. First and foremost listen to understand but never bear the cost of the problem, it is not yours. Don’t take it home. Sponges get bogged down when a saturation of water whereas rocks just let it roll off. Do what you say you’re going to do (Shane Flannigan / Grant Adamson) – I first heard this during a footy preseason in 2009. Just in passing, my Coach said “All you want to do is everything you say you’re going to do”. This super simple yet effective message brings awareness to your words and actions. This is not to scare you but to keep you accountable to your words and raise your expectations of yourself. There is always going to be someone bigger, stronger, fitter and faster than you. (My Dad)- But that doesn’t me you don’t try because it’s up to you when you give up. It’s hard to beat someone that doesn’t quit. (My Dad)-This has stuck with me for a long time and I live by this every day. You might be bigger and stronger or smarter and have more money but I won’t give up. Will you? NEVER GIVE UP. How do we stop having bad days? (Pete Tansley) – My business coach asked me this one day and it was instantly thought provoking. It made me pause and think of a better way to live my life and if I was having bad days, how could I change this? Growth Mindset vs Fixed Mindset (unknown) – If you’re FIXED you constantly see problems and will run away from anything you’re not good at. If you’re set in a GROWTH mindset you will see problems challenges for you to try and solve. Be willing, be positive and be ready (Mitch Kochonda) – This guy is an untapped well of knowledge! So many tips and small nuggets of wisdom especially in relation to discipline. Be willing to see something from another perspective, be positive in the dark and the light and always be ready. What’s your worthy ideal? (Keegan Smith) Another great question about searching for deeper meaning and wanting to achieve more from this spectacular thing called life. Basically, what is your life worth? Believe in yourself. Your hands don’t change size. Your brain shrinks (Unknown) – In footy we avoid situations due to the pressure not the skill. An example being not passing the ball near line but being able to do the same thing 20m out. Commitment is staying true to the words you say even when feeling is gone (Unknown) – When things get hard or you lose your direction. Remember why you started and keep pushing through the tough to get the rewards.   Hopefully you can all get some inspiration or motivation from a few of these.       <image:caption>“Growth is in the action. Virtue is in the struggle.” Goal setting and achieving is like a muscle that needs to be worked repeatedly until it is strong. You will be able to create bigger and better goals through success and repetition of achieving smaller targets. Just like growing physical muscle through training and exercise, eventually you can go big and not look back.   SET Take time to step away from your situation &amp; circumstances and think about what you really want and what the outcome ideally needs to be. Start writing down thoughts and ideas that come to mind based on the agenda of your goals i.e. Fitness, Health, Career, Relationships, Family etc. Don’t over think it. These thoughts and ideas shouldn’t be stopped by fear or over analysing. You are just getting it out of your head and onto paper. Just write down what you really want. If you want to create goals for all areas in your life then sub headings can also help break it down. Eg: health, career, relationships etc. Dial in and focus on these goals. Make them crystal clear. No fluff, no maybes. Write them with conviction or like it’s already done. (AFFIRMATION)   The SMART Principle is a great place to start. S – Specific goal. What is the exact ideal outcome of your goal? M – Measureable. Can you track the progress? How will you measure the outcome? A – Attainable + Action Orientated. Is the goal reasonable enough to be accomplished? R – Realistic. Is the goal worthwhile and does it meet your eventual long term needs? Is it RELLEVENT? T – Time. Your objective needs to have a time limit otherwise any sense of focus or urgency is lost. Once you have your goals written out, organise them into priority and time frames.  PLAN  Once you have prioritised the most important and actionable goals, start to set a plan of attack. You may find that you’re not exactly sure how you are going to achieve these goals, so you will need to set plans around educating yourself and figuring out how you are going to achieve them. This might mean researching and educating yourself, employing a coach, talking to friends, listening to podcasts etc etc. Knowledge is power. Make your plan based on YOUR realistic time frames you have each day/week/month. Unless your goal is so strong that it burns a hole in your heart and you will move everything in your life to do it, then you will need to be realistic about how much time you will need to give it. ACTION  Get yourself into action mode. CREATE MOMENTUM. You must do something immediately to create momentum and amplify the commitment. It can be small but it needs to be a forward step. Sign up for that race, ring that person to enquire about that job, etc etc. Small actions become big actions. DON’T OVERTHINK IT. Just keep moving forward. Tell EVERYONE. Get yourself ACCOUNTABLE. Perhaps hire a coach or find yourself an accountability buddy. Read your goals daily. WE ARE OUR RITUALS. So what you do repeatedly becomes you. Your daily habits and rituals should start contributing to your goals.   REASSES Re-evaluate your goals often (weekly + monthly) to see how you are tracking. BE HONEST.   MY FINAL TIP: FAIL FORWARD If you’re going to fail. Fail forward. Fail trying your best. Fail gracefully. Fail intelligently. Fail with integrity. For the past 5 years the BMF has worked alongside Make A Wish Foundation and the Noosa Triathlon to raise over $150,000 for critically ill children. We have over a dozen clients partake in the triathlon every year to challenge themselves physically while also raising money for a much needed cause.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>SAMSON CHALLENGE The Samson Challenge is a four-person team event with each team put through nine gruelling challenges which includes, farmers carry, prowler push, 130kg tyre flip, 2 x 2km run, 1km swim, sled pull and a crazy obstacle course.  BMF enter mens, womens and mixed teams of four every year for an epic day out to challenge all aspects of fitness and strength. The morning consists of three events (the Challenge, the Taste Tester &amp; the Young Guns) with all events involving an ocean swim and beach running, with distances that can be achieved by all ages and abilities. Archie Schiller has been battling a heart condition since he was three months old and has already undertaken almost a dozen surgeries. His dream was to meet the Australian cricket team and as a part of the Make A Wish Foundation Noosa Triathlon team, the BMF Crew raised over $16,000 to help make this dream come true. Not only did Archie meet the team, he was named captain for the Boxing Day Test and walked out side by side with Captain Tim Paine. This is what it’s about guys.
